Most greases and base oils can withstand temperatures dipping below zero degrees C, and many can tolerate temperatures below -10 degrees. But if temperatures drop into the critical zone when the lubricant begins to stiffen or become extremely viscous, the application will not be lubricated properly and some equipment may seize up under these conditions. Depending on the chemical composition, a lubricant will start to exhibit the properties similar to a solid—with catastrophic results for equipment

Lubrication in extreme low temperatures requires proper thickened, specialized, based on low-viscosity synthetics (such as PAO or ester-based oils) greasse. Such type of grease must prevent thickening, which causes, increased torque, component seizure, and severe wear. Critical considerations include selecting lubricants with a low pour point and high viscosity index, ensuring flowability to prevent starvation during cold starts.

To evaluate cold-weather performance, several standard test methods are applied to measure a number of critical properties. The pour point test determines the lowest temperature at which oil, chilled under test conditions, will still flow—an indication of the lowest temperature at which oil is still pumpable. Flow pressure tests determine the amount of pressure required at a given temperature to make a grease flow within the system—providing indications of the energy required to pump or otherwise apply the lubricant. A low temperature torque test is used to measure the extent to which a grease retards rotation of a bearing assembly at the test temperature.

Special LowTemp grease recommended for low temperatures and loads. This grease is especially suitable for use on controls, hinges, lock parts and for greasing electric contacts, switches, etc.
Arctic lubrication grease
It is fairly muti-purpose grease for airframe lubrication. It is particularly suitable in high to very high speed bearings, or in components exposed to extremely low temperature, down to – 73°C. The
very low resisting torque of Molylub LowTemp makes it the best choice for parts actuated by low-power motors. Because of its excellent load carrying capacity, it is also suitable for heavily loaded ball, roller or needle bearings, gears or actuator screws.

To ensure cold-weather performance, the user can consult the testing data available from reputable manufacturers. Operators also have more applicator options, including heaters, larger feed lines, elbows, automatic paddles, single-point lubricators, and pumps, as well as spray and brush applications. Where specific challenges arise, specific formulations can be selected using base oils, thickeners and additives to ensure satisfactory lubricant performance in practically every climate.
